With the WNBA playoffs kicking off tonight, here are the five stars who could dominate this postseason.
The 2021 WNBA season was jampacked with a plethora of storylines, it being the first full season since the pandemic hit. This season we saw the resurgence of many stars who missed the W Bubble, iconic Twitter moments and midway through the season, the U.S. women’s basketball team win a seventh consecutive Olympic gold medal.
The playoffs kick off tonight with a Round 1 doubleheader: the Chicago Sky (6) play the Dallas Wings (7) at 8 p.m. ET and the Pheonix Mercury (5) take on the New York Liberty (8) at 10 p.m. ET. Both games will be on ESPN2.
The playoff standings are:
- Connecticut Sun
- Las Vegas Aces
- Minnesota Lynx
- Seattle Storm
- Pheonix Mercury
- Chicago Sky
- Dallas Wings
- New York Liberty
These playoffs will be the first for some of the league’s newest stars in Arike Ogunbowale of the Wings and the Liberty’s Sabrina Ionescu, but it features some of the game’s biggest stars who have their eyes set on championship gold.
Here are five stars who could dominate in the WNBA playoffs:
5. Liz Cambage
Australian-born Liz Cambage has recently had an eventful couple of years. After believing she might have caught the coronavirus in the winter of 2020, the star center decided to opt-out of the 2020 WNBA Bubble in Orlando, Florida, thus missing the entire 2020 season.
This season, Camabage had her worst statistical season since her rookie year with only a little over 14 points and eight rebounds a game, albeit, she was fourth in blocks with 1.6 a game.
Although she came back this season and was good enough to make the All-Star team, her numbers were not as dazzling as they were in 2018, when she was the MVP runner-up and she should be primed to dominate in the Las Vegas Aces frontcourt alongside superstar teammate A’ja Wilson.
At six-eight, Cambage is one of the biggest players that will take the court in these playoffs and she should look to take advantage of that. Her postgame, versatility around the rim and putback ability will be a huge benefit to an Aces team that will likely be bigger than most of their opponents.
