The Hawks have a lot of interest in shaking up their current underachieving roster. Here are three teams that could help them by landing John Collins.
John Collins is not a strange name to find himself bandied about in NBA trade rumors. The Hawks have been connected with deals designed to shed the big man’s salary ever since inking him to a big-money extension. His fit with an Atlanta roster that’s clearly built around the backcourt of Trae Young and Dejounte Murray is questionable at best.
The athletic 25-year-old has seen his touches drop precipitously this season, but that hasn’t stopped teams from calling Atlanta about his availability. He’s one guy whose status should be monitored closely as the NBA Trade Deadline creeps closer.
The question is which team might be willing to be aggressive in their efforts to land the former Wake Forest star. NBA fans should keep a close eye on the following three teams.
Which teams could come out of nowhere to land John Collins?
3. Brooklyn Nets
The Nets are seemingly locked into their current big three of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and Ben Simmons. They would love the opportunity to add a versatile big like Collins to their roster.
His shooting ability would help balance out the floor for the team’s starting five. Simmons’ status as a complete non-shooter requires Brooklyn to play bigs that can shoot alongside him. Collins could slot nicely into the team’s starting group in place of Nic Claxton as a small ball center.
The Nets also have Joe Harris’ salary to use to help the Hawks get off of future years of Collins’ deal. Harris’ contract expires after next season which would give Atlanta some future flexibility. Brooklyn would need to add some assets and salary to make a deal work, but it might be the best they can do with Harris’ salary slot.
